About Us
The San Marino Water System primarily utilizes groundwater sources from the Main San Gabriel and Raymond Basins. Since these basins have regulated groundwater usage, additional supplies are needed to meet seasonal and annual demands.
These supplementary water resources are purchased from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWDSC). The San Marino system receives treated surface water from MWDSC's Weymouth Treatment Plant, with raw surface water originating from the Sacramento River Delta and Colorado River.
Water is transported to Los Angeles via the California Aqueduct (State Water Project) and Colorado River Aqueduct. Treatment processes for imported water include coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. Groundwater supplies are treated with chlorine while surface water receives chloramine disinfection to maintain quality throughout the distribution system.
In 2017, the San Marino Water System supply consisted of 90% local well water and 10% purchased treated surface water from MWDSC. California American Water distributes this water to residential and commercial customers across San Marino and portions of Rosemead, Temple City, San Gabriel, El Monte, Pasadena, and unincorporated Los Angeles County areas.
