About Us
Where does your water come from? Hingham and Hull residents receive water from four groundwater wells. Each well's water undergoes treatment before distribution through an extensive network spanning over fifty-one miles of piping, supported by a 1.2-million-gallon storage facility. The water system is situated within the Blackstone River Watershed and serves approximately 8,400 residents. In 2017, the average daily distribution was 1.49 million gallons (MGD), with supplemental water from the City of Worcester contributing 46.1 million gallons (about 8% of total consumption).
Water Treatment Process: All well water is naturally filtered underground before receiving chemical treatment for disinfection and pH balancing. The Millbury Avenue Well water undergoes additional filtration at the dedicated Treatment Facility. Water from the Jacques wells receives specialized ion exchange treatment to remove perchlorate contaminants.
Health Concerns: Disinfection by-products (DBPs) form when natural organic matter reacts with chlorine added to eliminate bacteria. Current regulations limit Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM) and Total Haloacetic Acids (THAA). Long-term exposure to elevated DBPs may affect liver, kidney, or nervous system function and potentially increase cancer risk. Massachusetts has implemented stricter DBP regulations to enhance public safety.
Lead Awareness: The EPA has determined there is no safe level of lead in municipal water. If detected, lead can cause serious health effects, particularly in children (developmental delays, learning difficulties, irritability) and adults (high blood pressure, joint pain, memory issues). Aquarion monitors lead levels through testing high-risk homes with older plumbing systems.
Source Water Assessment: The Massachusetts DEP's evaluation indicates that Millbury System water sources have high vulnerability to potential contamination. The complete assessment is available at mass.gov/dep/water/drinking/2186000.pdf.
