The Horsham Township Water Authority was established in 1954, later merging with the Horsham Sewer Authority in 1998 to create the current Horsham Water and Sewer Authority. Since then, we've continuously improved our services and infrastructure. In 2017, Aqua Pennsylvania, Inc. managed water operations and performed required water quality testing under PA Department of Environmental Protection guidelines.

Water Sources

Most of HWSA's water comes from groundwater wells located throughout Horsham Township, with some water sourced from surface supplies. We maintain 15 wells near commercial areas and interconnections with North Wales Water Authority (NWWA) and Aqua Pennsylvania's Central System.

In response to perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) detected in Horsham's groundwater, we've installed temporary treatment systems for wells 15, 17, and 21, with permanent systems for wells 21 and 40. For more information on our action plan, visit: https://www.horshamwater-sewer.com/pfc-action-updates.

Source Water Assessment

The Pennsylvania DEP has completed source water assessments for our groundwater sources. Reports are available through the DEP website (www.depweb.state.pa.us - search "Source Water Assessment Reports") or by contacting the DEP Southeast Regional Office at 484.250.5900.

Potential Contaminant Sources

Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and can pick up substances from animal or human activities.

Contaminants that may be present in source water include:

• Microbial contaminants like viruses and bacteria from sewage plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
• Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals, either naturally occurring or from stormwater runoff, industrial waste, oil/gas production, or farming
• Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, stormwater runoff, and residential uses
• Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organics from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, runoff, and septic systems
• Radioactive contaminants, either naturally occurring or from oil/gas production and mining

Radon, an unregulated radioactive gas, may enter homes directly from underground. Tap water is generally a minor source of indoor radon. Our 2014 average radon concentration was 840 pCi/L, with a range of ND - 2,020 pCi/L.

The EPA sets regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA establishes similar limits for bottled water. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.
